To describe my lifelong fascination with flight and with creatures that fly I like to echo the words of John James Audubon who in 1839 wrote of himself as "...one who never can cease to admire and to study with zeal and the most heartfelt reverence, the wonderful productions of an Almighty Creator."

Northern (Red-shafted) Flicker
This day was cold, and the sun never broke through, but when this Flicker came down to see what I was doing in his neighborhood the afternoon seemed to get a little brighter and warmer.
Here's a picture of a southern cousin of his: http://dualravens.com/presentmatters/?p=847
I'm a big fan of flickers. They have those great beaks, yet don't have the attitude of most woodpeckers. And their plaintive call is always soothing somehow. I always seem to think they're looking for a friend.
