On Winter Ridge above Summer Lake last weekend there were also many butterflies brightening the morning. I believe this is a Variable Checkerspot, and I believe it's on a type of Ceanothus blossom. Any correction or more specific i.d. information is welcome.

I'm going to say it's a Northern Checkerspot. The Variable has fewer orange patches...more black. But, they are SO similar.

I appreciate the suggestion, especially since I'm not a "butterfly person." But in my books the Northern is shown with white only along the margin where the Variable has orange. The Variable is shown with white spots across the mid-part of the wings where the Northern is shown with orange. Hmm... The game goes on.
