Migrating Western Tanager
For a Western Tanager traveling between its summer home in the evergreen forests of the west and its winter home in the forests of Central and South America, migration time can mean crossing a lot of open spaces in between. My friend Howard photographed this one out in the Eastern Oregon high desert in Harney County, Oregon. The isolated occasional oases, separated by vast stretches of sagebrush and juniper habitat, often provide very exciting birding hotspots during migration. Congratulations, Howard, for being at the right place at the right time!
